Pan American given permission to use Canton Island as air base. Washington, D.C., April 13. Following an agreement between the United States and Great Brittan for the common use of the Island of Canton and Enderbury in the South Pacific Ocean for international aviation and communication, Secretary of interior Harold Ickes today signed a license permitting Pan American Airways to use Canton Island as an air base for its commercial trans-Pacific air transport service between California and New Zealand. Secretary Ickes is show presenting the pen to Juan Trippe, President of Pan American, after the signing. 4-13-39
